Invitation to submit comments on the COMESA-EAC-SADC Tripartite Free Trade Area Negotiations

via The Department of Trade & Industry:

The Department of Trade & Industry wishes to inform stakeholders of the on-going Tripartite Free Trade Area negotiations between the Member States of the Southern Africa Development Community, Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) and the East African Community (EAC).
These negotiations were launched by a summit of Heads of States and Government in June 2011. The TFTA presents the opportunity of large market comprising 26 countries, with a combined population of nearly 600 million people, a total Gross Domestic Product of approximately one trillion dollars.
Modalities for a tariff offer have been agreed between the negotiating parties. Currently a consultation process is underway to identify and refine South Africa’s export interests to this region as well as import sensitivities, in order to finalise a tariff offer.

Significant progress has been made already through analysis and consultations with stakeholders in NEDLAC.

The DTI however, would like to use this opportunity to invite any pertinent comments (not already submitted), by no later than 30 June 2013.

For submission of inputs please contact: Thembekile Mlangeni, or call on 012 394 1702 or alternatively contact Elizabeth Van Renen on 012 394 3050
